How the RSMA spends your kind contributions
Grants to the RSMU
This year the Association paid the RSMU £3,900 to support a variety of special events like the Freshers’ Dinner, the Spring Dinner and the all-important Bottle Match. Notably, at short notice, the Association bankrolled the Spring Dinner following the IC Union failing to support. Without this intervention, the event would not have taken place
Grants to departmental clubs and societies
Most years the Association gives money to these societies to help run their activities. Applications are considered throughout the year and include one from the RSM Motor Club to help support Clementine (Clem), the RSM motorised mascot, which has seen a renewed involvement at RSMA and RSMU events.
100 Club Final Year bursaries
These bursaries are to reward students of good academic standing who have also shown exceptional RSM spirit in their early years. The Association increased this last year to £1,250 for the 2024/25 academic year and the Association is currently accepting applications.
Illing Essay Prize (previously known as the ‘Essay Competition’)
This prize, recently increased to £250, is awarded for the best technical essay, which should have a link to environmental matters. The winning essay gets published in the Imperial Engineer. The Association has received a number of entries this year and is deliberating on a winner which will be announced at the AGM in October.
Grants for expeditions
The Association has received applications from two students for help in funding their approved summer expeditions. Grants of £250 each have been agreed.
The Association supports students in a number of other ways and, whilst not taken up this term, the following are available if needed;
Discretionary grant/loans for hardship and grants/loans for the arts
Money is available to assist individual students suffering unexpected financial hardship, either through loss of support beyond their control or through shorter-term financial hardship like injury, making travel to campus impossible except by taxi.
The Association is keen that the arts in its broadest sense (music, dance, painting, etc.) should not be forgotten about just because you have chosen a technical career. This new scheme will make grants of up to £250 to individuals who are struggling to pay for their artistic interests.
Grants/loans for education
The Association has recently made a £250 grant to a student enabling them to attend a summer symposium. In addition, the RSMA will also consider an interest free loan for larger sums to support costs of field trips, symposiums and vacation projects that are complementary to a student’s degree course.
End of term final year event (final year Beer ‘n’ Bite)
This year the Association supported 31 students in attending a great evening on Tuesday 25 June 2024 at Eastside, close to the university. A great evening was had by all.
The RSMA is planning on joining the RSMU at the upcoming Fresher’s Fair at the start of the 2025 academic year to help promote the aims of the RSM and RSMA to new, and existing, students. We are seeking a couple of RSMA ambassadors to help pitch the Association to the new students. If you are able to join, please contact president@rsma.org.uk.

2024 Annual General Meeting to be held on Tuesday 8 October
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held in the RSM Building in the first weeks of the new academic year and will tie in with a new social event involving the students.
Agendas, accounts and papers will be prepared over the summer and made available ahead of the AGM as usual. This will be a free event and with the AGM papers a booking link will be sent to register your interest.

2024 Bottle Match – save the date
The date has been fixed for the 2024 Bottle Match Weekend to be held at the CSM ground in Cornwall from 23 – 25 February.
The RSM Union is aiming to take 180 students (players + spectators). Sports covered over the weekend include rugby, men’s and women’s hockey, netball, football, tennis, badminton, squash and lacrosse.
Annual Dinner 2023
The 150th Annual Dinner of the former students of the Royal School of Mines – more latterly known as the Royal School of Mines Associations Annual Dinner – was held on 24 November 2023.
The sell-out event brought together 140 guests consisting of 56 alumni and 49 students alongside honoured guests from the College. Once again the generosity of the RSMA membership was on display with 46 students being supported to attend the dinner. The Peter Harding Memorial prize was presented to Tim Cotton and David Bishop, with the Rees Rawlings award going to Sam Casement.
